Calling All Black Pre-Med Students!

Student National Medical Association Mentorship Program

The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.  The Black Resource Center and UC San Diego's SNMA Chapter are partnering to offer a free mentorship program that provides Black identifying undergraduate students with the necessary tools and resources to navigate the pre-medical track.  The goals of this program are to:

  • Increase knowledge of the pre-medical track including assisting with course selection and career planning
  • Connect students with research, clinical shadowing, and community engagement opportunities
  • Increase engagement with UC San Diego's School of Medicine
  • Decrease the stress associated with being a pre-med student
  • Mitigate barriers to applying to medical school
  • Increase medical school application competitiveness

The program consists of an upper and lower cohort:

  • Upper Cohort: 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students
  • Lower Cohort: 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students

Program Requirements and Expectations:

In order to participate in the program, students must be prepared to:

  • Attend monthly one-on-one mentorship check-ins
  • Attend small group meetings with other student aprticipants
  • Attend one social event per quarter
  • Attend one professional/academic enrichment event per quarter
  • Upper cohort students are required to engage in a scholarly project which will be presented at the SNMA Mentorship Program Conference (2022 date to be determined)
  • Lower cohort students are expected to attend the SNMA Mentorship Program Conference (2022 date to be determined)

There is no cost to participate in the SNMA Mentorship Program.
