At the end of every academic year, the Black Resource Center partners with the Black Student Union to host our annual Harambee Achievement Ceremony. The Harambee Achievement Ceremony is a cultural celebration that honors the academic accomplishments, resilience, and collective spirit of students at UC San Diego. Rooted in the Swahili word "Harambee," meaning "let us pull together," the ceremony reflects the power of unity and the intergenerational support—family, mentors, community, and ancestors—that undergirds each scholar’s journey. More than a recognition of academic success, this ceremony is a rite of passage that uplifts cultural legacy, affirms purpose (Nia), and celebrates the communal triumph of our students as they shape the future with brilliance, intention, and pride.
The event recognizes graduates' accomplishments and provides an opportunity for them to honor significant people who have helped them achieve their goal. Students who sign up to participate in the event will receive the graduation sash. Sashes will not be handed out prior to the event. The ceremony reinforces the bonds of scholarship and extends the sense of community and belonging. Students must sign up by Friday, May 2, 2025. Click HERE to register.
The Harambee Achievement Ceremony is open to all graduating students and their families, regardless of race, color, national origin, or any other protected status.
All questions regarding the event can be directed to the Black Resource Center at brc.ucsd.edu
